Despite playing no trials and having to undergo 31 days of COVID-19 related quarantine, the PNG Hunters have put on a convincing display in the opening match of the 2021 Intrust Super Cup, going down to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 20 – 18 at Runaway Bay.

Despite being down 18 – 6 at halftime, the Hunters outscored the Seagulls 12 – 2 in the second half to set up a thrilling finale in the competition opener.

Just down the road in Tugun, the Tweed Seagulls overcame a 12-point half-time deficit to defeat the visiting Central Queensland Capras 28 – 18, whilst up at Davies Park, the South Logan Magpies defeated the Burleigh Bears 36 – 20.

The South Logan Magpies were bolstered by former NRL players Karmichael Hunt and Kevin Locke and current Brisbane Broncos contracted player Tom Dearden for the match, with the trio helping the home team edge the visiting Bears.

Out west at North Ipswich Reserve, the Townsville Blackhawks dominated the Ipswich Jets to score the biggest win of the round, whilst up on the Sunshine Coast, the Northern Pride were too strong for the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

In other matches played over the weekend, the Redcliffe Dolphins were forced to work for their away win against the Mackay Cutters in an intense encounter than went down to the wire, whilst Norths Devils defeated the Brisbane Tigers 40 – 10.
