The Koiari Rugby League has announced plans to establish a new league to cover the Trans-Vanapa, Koiari and Mekeo Local Level Government (LLG) areas in order to provide greater opportunities for the youths in the region.

The new league, which will complement the existing Koiari competition based in Sogeri, will look to kick off next month.

Koiari Rugby League President, Walo Auda, said he hoped the new competitions will provide a platform for the talented youth in the region to showcase their talents.

“Young people from this part of the district have been denied an opportunity to participate in sports competitions over the years”, Auda said.

The Trans-Vanapa competition will cover Osabewai, Vesubewai, Goldie, Nari-Bisogo, Laloki, Sabusa, Ruburogo-Dasiama, Brown River, Vanapa, Kerea, Kuriva, and East and West Mekeo.

Auda said, as League President, that he wanted to improve the standard of the sport in the district.

“I see that the majority of talented players are missing out on the local and semi-professional competitions” Auda said.

He said they were working with the district administration to register the competition under the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League, so that players could be selected into the Digicel Cup.

“This is how we create pathways for our younger generation to be able to improve their skills and further their rugby league careers” Auda said.
