History was made at the Mele Fields on Saturday when the first ever competitive Junior Rugby League match was held in the Pacific Island of Vanuatu.

The match featured Vanuatu’s newest Rugby League club, the Blacksands, which is based upon of the Blacksands community near Matao Tiupeniu on the Island of Efate. The Blacksands, who are a member club of the Port Vila Rugby League, are the first junior club created in Vanuatu, targeting kids aged 8 – 12 years old.

The Blacksands took on locals, the Mele Eels in Saturday’s historic fixture, with the new club winning 12 – 4.

The Blacksands, Mele Eels and Vanuatu Rugby League will work together to establish a Junior Rugby League program for the remainder of the 2018 season.
