Following a three-day summit in Newcastle, Australia, the technical standards leaders of the RLEF, Martin Crick, and Asia Pacific RL Confederation, Peter Corcoran, have agreed a coach education programme that will establish the first internationally recognised set of qualifications.

The four-year coach programme will commence in January 2019, the date by which they expect the new qualifications to be ready for adoption by the Rugby League International Federation.

“It’s a historic project for the sport and everyone is encouraged by the synergy between our combined approaches,” said Crick. “The ultimate objective is to raise standards of technical education in the member countries and ensure a consistent output. We are sharing resources and expertise to support this project.”

The two confederations have agreed standardised programmes for level 1 and level 2, with flexible delivery patterns to meet local needs. They also agreed the continuing professional development element of the project, which will see new practitioners certified upon completion of a course but only qualified upon completion of CATO (consolidate-application-team-observation).

RLIF development manager Tas Baitieri and the NRL Pacific programs manager, Michael Asensio, were also part of the summit.
