Rugby League is set to return to Argentina for the first time since 2006 when the newly formed Confederacion Argentina de Rugby League host their first domestic game in Miramar.
Miramar is an Argentine city located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Buenos Aires Province, home to over 30,000 people and now home to the re-birth of Rugby League in the country.
The match, to be played between two locally formed clubs will be played at the Club Defensores de Miramar home ground as a curtain raiser to a scheduled soccer semi-final in the town.
Being played as the curtain raiser will ensure the Confederacion Argentina de Rugby League gets the opportunity to expose the two new clubs and the code of Rugby League to what should be a crowd of over 1,500.
Rugby League was last played in 2005 – 2006, when the Australian Police toured the country, defeating the national team 40 – 4 and 60 – 6 in the two respective fixtures. A nines tournament was setup post the Police tour which gained the interest of a number of players in the Buenos Aires region, however attempts to start a domestic competition stalled shortly after that.
The latest iteration of Argentinian Rugby League, the Confederacion Argentina de Rugby League is working with the Latin Heat Rugby League in Australia to help establish a sustainable model to help not only re-introduce the code to the region, but ensure it has a long term future.
